Staron centerpiece

For Fuorisalone 2022 I wanted to face this challenge: can a hard and resistant material appear soft and ethereal?
Can a contemporary design still give an idea of warmth and a sense of home?
To answer both themes, of course, I had to revisit a common object, with very simple functions and usually interpreted in a traditional way: the centerpiece.

The project was conceived on the occasion of DesignWeek 2022 in Milan, thanks to an initiative of the Cocreando team and the collaboration with the company Lotte Chemical, which financed the project to enhance the properties of their acrylic material Staron Solid Surface.

Once I chose the theme to be developed, the first step was the research. There are many variations on the theme of the centerpiece, with a great variety of traditional approaches and few contemporary reinterpretations. The materials used are the most diverse but none of them with a deformable and bondable material such as a solid surface. The project would therefore make the most of the potential given by this new material to investigate new forms.

The designed plate performs simple functions, contains and furnishes, immediately enhancing the surface on which it is located. It is studied in every detail but its strength is simplicity: so much so that it can be used in different contexts and with different objects, which makes it extremely versatile.

It can be rotated, and concave bases have been obtained on the top to support elements of different shapes and sizes, a candle holder base (possibly convertible into a lamp holder) and a cutlery glass (or pen holder etc.). The design has been studied in such a way as to return an irregular shape, to play on a dynamic aesthetic composition.

Two prototypes were created, exhibited in two locations: in Brera a Casa Platform (well-known architecture magazine) and in Tortona at the ROS showroom (dedicated hotel and home supplies). All the photos were taken during the week of the Salone del Mobile.
